ORPHEUS - 1968 S - T

ORPHEUS \ 1968 S \ T .

Bio.

From Worcester, Massachusetts, Orpheus were formed by ex-Villagers, Arnold and McKenes, Gulliksen from The Blue Echoes and Harry Sandler from The Mods. McKenes and Gulliksen had earlier worked together in a few folk groups, including The College Boys, who had one 45 The Man (Swan S-4166) 1963.
Under the guidance of Alan Lorber, who produced all their albums, Orpheus became part of the "Boss-town Sound" movement but cultivated an almost singer-songwriter styled soft rock sound with folkie elements, at variance with the overtly psychedelic sounds and image of most of their stablemates. Possibly a marginal case for inclusion here therefore and not recommended to either garage or psych fans, although some of their material could be classified as 'hippie-rock' at a stretch.

Ill WIND - FLASHES + bonus tracks 1968 -

Ill WIND \ FLASHES + bonus tracks 1968.

A few..
Ill Wind was officially launched on summer 1966 , with a lineup of Judy Bradbury (vocal), Ken Frankel (guitar, banjo, vocal), Richard Griggs (guitar, vocal), Carey Mann (bass, vocal), and Dave Kinsman (drums, vocal).
This configuration began working regularly in September and lasted until the end of the year, when Judy left for a teaching job in Hawaii and was replaced by Conny Devanney. The new lineup performed througout New England and in New York, recorded several demos during 1967, toured California in the summer of 1967, and recorded the album "Flashes" in winter of 1968.
Ill Wind was probably the second psychedelic band in New England (after the Lost) and was certainly one of the first to perform a large proportion of their own original material. The band was popular on the college and resort circuits and were regulars at the Boston Tea Party and at the outdoor concerts at the Cambridge Common.
Their repuation lives on, though. Flashes has been reissued at lest four times (never legitimately) and cuts from it have appeared on at least four compilations. Original copies of the LP sell at eBay auction for as much as $175.00 and the record was listed as one of the "greatest albums of all time" in 2003 edition of the Mojo Collection.

Bio :
Earth Opera were an American psychedelic rock group from the late 1960s featuring Peter Rowan and David Grisman. Both Rowan and Grisman were virtuoso folk and bluegrass performers in Boston clubs, who became caught up in the changes in the music scene in the mid 1960s. They formed Earth Opera in 1967, and were joined by John Nagy on bass, Paul Dillon on drums, and Bill Stevenson on keyboards and vibraphone. Elektra Records issued 2 lp's, Their self-titled debut album, it was a mixture of folk and psychedelic influences. and "The Great American Eagle Tragedy". By this time, Stevenson had left but the album featured an array of eminent guests including John Cale (viola) and Bill Keith (pedal steel). “The Great American Eagle Tragedy” managed to reach the lower end of the national charts, the cover featuring a parody of the US presidential seal with a superimposed death skull and what looks like blood stains. However, the band’s relative lack of success caused Earth Opera to break up in 1969. Rowan, Grisman and Nagy all continued their careers in the music business.

EDEN'S CHILDREN \ EDEN'S CHILDREN + SURE LOOKS REAL 1968.

Bio :
Another one of the biggie's of the Bosstown Sound scene.
Together with Ultimate Spinach, Orpheus and Beacon Street Union, they formed the structure of what was called the Bosstown Sound. The sonority of the city of Boston. They had almost nothing to do with one another apart from having being formed in the same city. Formed on the Spring of 1967, they took their name from a Rolling Stones Song called “December’s Children (And Everybody’s)”. Scarce is the information about them other than the fact that the recorded two Albums.
