SAM THE SHAM and THE PHARAOHS - Anthology -

SAM THE SHAM & THE PHARAOHS \ ANTHOLOGY.

A few words :
Best known for their 1965 smash "Wooly Bully," which helped introduce Tex-Mex rhythms to mainstream rock & roll, Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs were formed in Dallas by lead singer Domingo Samudio, who took the name Sam the Sham from a joke about his inability as a vocalist.
The Pharaohs consisted of guitarist Ray Stinnet, bassist David Martin, saxophonist Butch Gibson, and drummer Jerry Patterson. Before hitting it big with "Wooly Bully," a song about Samudio's cat, the band recorded the independent single "Haunted House," which helped them get a deal with MGM.
Following "Wooly Bully," the group recorded a series of largely novelty singles, but only "Li'l Red Riding Hood" approached the success of its predecessor.

Later moved to Memphis and became a street preacher..

GARY PUCKETT & THE UNION GAP - Anthology -

GARY PUCKETT & THE UNION GAP \ ANTHOLOGY
A few words :
Frontman Puckett was born October 17, 1942, in of all places Hibbing, MN, (where Bob Dylan went to high school). He picked up the guitar as a teen, and while attending college in San Diego played in a number of local bands before quitting school to focus on music.
Puckett eventually landed with the Outcasts, a hard rock group comprised of bassist Kerry Chater, keyboardist Gary "Mutha" Withem, tenor saxophonist Dwight Bement, and drummer Paul Wheatbread.
Despite earning a strong local following, in 1966 Wheatbread relocated to Los Angeles to serve as the house drummer on the television series Where the Action Is; the remaining members of the Outcasts toured the Pacific Northwest, and on their return, Wheatbread also moved back to San Diego and rejoined the lineup. For reasons unknown, manager Dick Badger -- convinced his charges needed a strong visual look -- then sent the group to Tijuana, where they were outfitted with Union Army-style Civil War uniforms.

In the spring of 1968, the Union Gap scored their biggest hit, "Young Girl," "My love for you is way out of line/you better run, girl, you're much too young, girl," an anguished Puckett wailed. The juggernaut rolled on, and the group continued rattling off hits -- "Lady Willpower," "Over You," and "Don't Give in to Him" among them -

BILLY J. KRAMER with THE DAKOTAS - Listen 1963 -

BILLY J. KRAMER with the DAKOTAS \ LISTEN 1963.
A few words :
One of the most popular Merseybeat singers, Billy J. Kramer (born Billy Ashton) was
one of the most mild-mannered rockers of the entire British Invasion. He wasn't that
noteworthy a singer, either, and more likely than not would have never been heard
outside of northern England if he hadn't been fortunate enough to become a client of
Beatles manager Brian Epstein.
Even more crucially, he was gifted with several
Lennon-McCartney songs in 1963 and 1964, several of which the Beatles never ended up recording.
In mid 1963 the song "Do You Want to Know a Secret." made it to #2 in the UK
followed by another Lennon-McCartney effort "I'll Keep You Satisfied"and "From a Window" which only just became a Top Ten hit.
The first Billy J Kramer with the Dakotas album, "Listen...", was released at the end of 1963, and eventually reached No.11 on the LP chart.
Early in 1964, the group felt
they needed to release a single that wasn't written by the Beatles (!) and chose "Little Children". This controversial move paid off, and the record went to No.1 on the British charts in the spring of 1964. Later that year, both "Bad To Me" and "Little Children" made the American Top 10, and the group visited the 'states, appearing on the Ed Sullivan Show, and playing to sell-out frenzied fans of the "British invasion"
sound.
Kramer had a brief solo career which took him eventually to live in America where Billy actually landed his biggest hit, the corny pop ballad "Little Children".

EMBRYO - Opal 1970 -

EMBRYO \ OPAL 1970.
A few words :
An irresistible platter of warped jazz-rock - the delicious combination of flute, Hammond organs and Fender Rhodes, electric piano tastes great to this palate. Forget fusion smoothies of the Weather Report or Spyro Gyra schools, this stuff has real guts and rough edges; it's played with suchurgency and heaviness that gave KRAUTROCK a new shape.

Line-up :

- Christian Burchard / drums, vocals - (Amon Duul)
- Ralph Fischer / bass, vocals
- Edgar Hofmann / saxophone, flute, percussion
- John Kelly / guitar, vocals -(Ten Years After )
with
- Bettsy Alleh / vocals
- Roberto Detree / motocello

RARE EARTH \ ECOLOGY 1970.

Two strong tracks propelled Ecology up the pop charts: the swaggering, bravado-laden "Born to Wander," written by Tom Baird, and a hard-hitting, rocking rendition of the Temptations' "I Know I'm Losing You, the epic remake of the latter is almost eleven minutes of pure funk-rock and a very good, on John Lennon and Paul McCartney's "Eleanor Rigby.
VERY GOOD.

JUICY LUCY - Juicy Lucy first lp 1969 -

JUICY LUCY
Bio :
Saucy blues-rockers Juicy Lucy formed in 1969 from the ashes of cult-favorite garage band the Misunderstood, reuniting vocalist Ray Owen, steel guitarist Glenn"Ross" Campbell and keyboardist Chris Mercer; with the additions of guitarist Neil Hubbard, bassist Keith Ellis and drummer Pete Dobson, the group immediately notched a UK Top 20 hit with their reading of the Bo Diddley perennial "Who Do You Love," with their self-titled debut LP falling just shy of the Top 40.
Ex-Zoot Money singer Paul Williams, guitarist Mick Moody and drummer Rod Coombes replaced Owen (who exited for a solo career), Hubbard and Dobson for 1970's Lie Back and Enjoy It, with bassist Jim Leverton assuming Ellis' duties for the follow-up, 1971's Get a Whiff a This.
The constant turnover clearly took its toll on the group both creatively and commercially, with co-founders Campbell and Mercer both exiting prior to the fourth Juicy Lucy album, 1972's Pieces, which was recorded by a makeshift lineup of Williams, Moody, keyboardist Jean Roussel and the former Blodwyn Pig rhythm section of bassist Andy Pyle and drummer Ron Berg. Juicy Lucy finally disbanded shortly thereafter.
